DRAM prices rise to suppress market demand

According to a recent study by IC Insights, a market research agency, the DRAM price per bit fell by an average of 33% per year during the 34 years from 1978 to 2012. However, from 2012 to 2017, the average price per DRAM dropped by only 3% per year. In addition, DRAM prices rose by 47% throughout the year in 2017, the largest annual increase since 1978, exceeding the 45% increase of 30 years ago in 1988.

In 2017, the DRAM bit rate of growth was 20%. In 2018, the three major DRAM manufacturers (such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron) all indicated that they expected DRAM bit growth to reach about 20% again. However, during the nine months from May 2017 to January 2018, the monthly growth rate of DRAM was only 13%.

In addition, the monthly price per month of DRAM is from January 2017 to January 2018. The price per megabyte of DRAM has been rising sharply. Compared with January 2017 in January 2017, the price of the DRAM increased by 47%. There is no doubt that electronic system manufacturers are currently scrambling to adjust and adapt to the soaring prices of DRAM.

Although it is difficult to accurately measure, IC Insights believes that the use of DRAM digits is also affected by price increases. The increased costs suppress demand, reduce costs, expand the scope of use and open up new applications. From January 2017 to January 2018, the correlation coefficient between the price per DRAM and the growth in the same period was -0.88. The two factors are exactly the opposite: it will be -1.0. Therefore, although system manufacturers have not reduced the amount of DRAM used in the systems currently shipping, there are rumors that some smartphone manufacturers will reduce the DRAM capacity in the coming new products.
