Micron CEO: China's memory industry is not threatening

Global memory chip maker Sanjiy Mehrotra, executive director of Micron Micron Technology Inc., said in an interview with the Nikkei News that the barrier to becoming a global supplier of major memory chips is high, and Chinese memory chip makers to Micron, Major players such as Samsung and SK Hynix did not pose a threat; China Ziguang Group had attempted to spend $230 million to acquire Micron in 2015 but was rejected.

Mei Guangtra, chief executive of Micron, bluntly stated that China's memory development is still in a very early stage and poses no threat to major players such as Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix.

Ziguang Group, which is regarded as China National Team of Memory, has actively expanded the memory chip market and even announced that Apple has considered purchasing NAND flash memory from its subsidiary Changjiang Storage Technology; but Merlottra pointed out that Chinese companies are The development of NAND and DRAM (dynamic random access memory) is still at a very early stage.

Melottar said: "To become an important supplier, we must have cutting-edge technology, intellectual property rights, mass production and product design and specifications that meet the needs of customers, but also have high quality; these require a lot of amazing strength, because It takes decades for other players to have such strength."

Melotta emphasized the importance of patents and other intellectual property rights. He said: “Large customers in the world must be aware that the products they purchase are designed after obtaining legal intellectual property rights, but Chinese companies’ intellectual property rights in DRAM or NAND are very weak.”

Memory is an important component of smart phones, data centers, and other information technology products. China uses the power of the entire country and hopes to achieve self-sufficiency in semiconductors. Merlott admits that China is an important market for Micron, Micron has many large Chinese customers, and Micron is investing in back-end packaging and testing plants in Xi’an.

He is optimistic about the prospects of memory chip prices, because the market cycle will be shortened. He expects the market's demand for DRAM and NAND to be the best ever, including huge demand from data centers, mobile phones, personal computers, automobiles, smart appliances, and smart cities.
