Persistent memory will be officially launched, and the storage industry will explode in 2018

January 29 news, according to Forbes magazine, in the past few years, many stores are brewing technology and market condition, and will be completely broke out in 2018, it will help enterprises suppliers and buyers have a huge impact. Forbes magazine's prediction for the storage industry's development trend in 2018 is as follows:

1. Persistent memory (SCM) explosion.
SCM are sometimes referred to as "persistent memory" (or called PM), although applications can treat SCM like dealing with existing system memory, but to use persistent memory may cause additional benefits, which can effectively to SSD drive into storage function and semantic memory bus DRAM.
To make the most of SCM, the industry must agree on new interfaces and reframe the application to take advantage of them. The storage network industry association (SNIA) is the standard organization in the storage industry. Over the years, SNIA has been setting driving standards around persistent memory, and these standards have begun to mature.

Intel has introduced these new standards into a reference practice for handling persistent storage class memory. Oracle also supports storage memory specifications.

Intel will officially launch the 3D XPoint product of the DIMM slot this year, officially known as Persistent memory (PM). Intel said, 3 d XPoint will help data center operators, developers, spanning capacity and performance of historic obstacle, it will change the application and design rules of the system, and reverse for over 50 years memory small, expensive and unstable, the traditional way of thinking.
Both Microsoft and the Linux community use Intel's PEM library and integrate it into SCM products. Microsoft began supporting SCM on Windows Server at the end of 2017, and recently tested the next version of Windows Server with more sophisticated support. In addition, Microsoft now supports SQL Server 2016 SP1 technology to enhance performance.

This year will be the year when the industry starts using SCM as the core part of its architecture in memory computing, big database, and analytics applications. We will also see the emergence of hardware products to support these new applications. For mainstream applications, it takes longer for them to enjoy the benefits of SCM, but in the end it will surely come true.
