Samsung is considering building a 10nm DRAM line at huacheng factory
The Samsung (Samsung Electronics) interested in South Korea huacheng campus construction of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) exposure equipment specialized production line, production of 10 nm level at the beginning of 2019 z (1) process DRAM, as far as possible in the DRAM market maintain technology gap with competitors, and get the most benefit.
According to the Korean media Digital Times, samsung electronics is set to build a new EUV production line in the parking lot near the 17 production line of the huacheng facility, which will begin construction in December 2017 and is scheduled to open in 2019. Samsung is also discussing whether to connect the EUV line with seven other original semiconductor production lines and conveyor belts. There are a variety of semiconductor production lines including DRAM, NAND Flash and wafer.
The industry believes that samsung will use EUV devices in addition to the EUV equipment in the wafer industry, and will use the EUV equipment in DRAM production, which will lead the production of 1znm production DRAM in 2019.
Samsung build production line can bring traffic load in a local, but recent huacheng city government has passed the traffic impact assessment review, therefore, samsung need to complete the rest of the factory apply for the administrative process, can be started immediately. Samsung has not made clear that it will use several EUV devices, but the industry suspects it should be between four and eight.
In October 2016, samsung began to repeatedly depict the mass production of 18nm DRAM with the existing exposure equipment, and has yet to release the 1ynm DRAM production plan. The industry believes that samsung is ready to make the 1znm production technology, just unable to decide when to import the time.
According to people familiar with the matter, samsung's EUV machine will in principle only be used for the work of the company, and may also be partially used in DRAM production. Samsung is most likely to mass-produce the EUV machine, which is produced by Dutch equipment maker ASML, but the price of the machine is hundreds of billions of won ($92.23 million), which is the biggest drawback.
Even so, samsung is considering using EUV devices at 1znm DRAM because of market dominance. In the third quarter of 2017, the market share of samsung in mobile devices and server DRAM was 58.3% and 45.9%, according to the municipal adjustment organization. DRAM's operating interest rate is 62 per cent higher.
SK Hynix, a rival, is also interested in producing DRAM in a more advanced way, with the rumored launch of 1xnm DRAM in the fourth quarter of 2017, and 1ynm DRAM in the next half of 2018. But SK hynix did not specify whether EUV equipment was used.
Separately, the south Korean news agency Newspim reported that samsung electronics' semiconductor services command has been moved to huaxi.
