Samsung: Not worried about the rise of Chinese chips makers

In recent years, China has continuously grown in R&D technology, hoping to catch up with foreign manufacturers. For example, in the field of memory, it has become a country that exports 1/5 of the world's memory, although analysts are optimistic about the entry of China's memory industry. Samsung said in a recent interview with the Korean magazine Investor that it is not worried about the rise of Chinese wafer makers.

In terms of profits, the Korean company Samsung is the world’s largest wafer manufacturer, followed by the US company Intel, but the Chinese semiconductor market is booming. In 2017, Huawei’s subsidiary Hass Semiconductor’s profit was estimated at RMB 26 billion (approximately RMB 3.87 billion). USD). China is also growing in terms of DRAM and NAND Flash, and Ziguang Storage has already come up with DDR3 products. Earlier it was reported that it would provide core resources for Intel’s SSDs.

But does this worry Samsung? According to Kim Ki-nam, head of the Samsung Device Solutions Division, there is "nothing at all."

Mr. Kim Ki-nam said: "Chinese companies are investing heavily in almost all types of semiconductors, including storage chips, but the technical threshold in this area is higher than in other industries." He added: "Overcoming these difficulties requires a large short-term. Investment, Samsung will go all out and continue to lead in this area."

At the same time, the growth of smart phone manufacturers in China is staggering, resulting in Samsung’s market share of smart phones in China falling to single digits. In discussing the statistics, Mr. Kim Ki-nam replied: "I have to apologize to shareholders for the declining market share in China. We need some time to see how these measures are achieved. In addition, the Chinese market More complex than South Korea, Samsung is trying different approaches, and the newly launched flagship Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S9 will help us increase our market share in recent months.”

Regardless of whether Samsung is willing to admit that China is a global giant in the smartphone market, China has accounted for three positions among the top five smartphone manufacturers, especially Huawei, which has increased its smartphone market share since 2015 and it may potentially exceed Samsung’s. The leading position has become the world's largest smartphone manufacturer and Xiaomi has taken over Samsung’s leading position in India.

Although Hass Semiconductor has a long way to go in the production of semiconductor wafers, it has proved that it is continuously discovering. For the future, Kim Kinam emphasized that Sasmung will spare no effort to maintain its leading position. Specific measures include the expansion of the second-generation 10nm DRAM factory and the planned production of three generations of 10nm DRAM and sixth-generation NAND flash memory.
