WD Reports Investment of 500 Billion Yen to Bring Toshiba to Increase Production of 3D NAND

The Nikkei Shimbun reported on the 10th that Toshiba's memory company Western Digital (WD) will invest 500 billion yen in joint ventures between the two companies over the next three years, in addition to the costs for the construction of a new factory in the Yokkaichi factory. It will also serve as investment funds for Kitakami Plant, which is expected to be opened in 2020.

The report pointed out that WD had previously filed a lawsuit in response to dissatisfaction with Toshiba’s sale of Toshiba Memory (TMC), a semiconductor business unit subsidiary, to the Japan-US-Korea alliance led by Bain Capital, a US private-equity firm. After about half a year of disputes, a settlement was reached in December of last year, and three months after the settlement was established, measures were taken to expand production capacity in the hope of recovering the “lost year”.

According to reports, TMC will continue to cooperate with WD after it is sold to the Japan-US-South Korea alliance, and due to the expansion of memory requirements, TMC/WD will use this new investment in order to respond to customers’ requests for increased production. Improve 3D NAND Flash production. TMC has demonstrated last fall that it will invest 3 trillion tens of billions of yen each year for investment.

The News Agency reported that TMC President Masao Sue (who is the vice president of Toshiba) stated on the 9th that "we are making various efforts to fight the TMC sale by the end of March." Regarding the status of review of the TMC sales laws in the country's exclusive prohibition law, Cheng Maokang pointed out that "except China, all other countries have completed the review."

According to the Harvest XQ Global Winner System Offer, WD rose 2.40% to close at $99.55 on the 9th. It continued to rise for the seventh consecutive trading day, hitting a record high since April 24, 2015; Toshiba rose 0.32% on the 9th, consecutively Two trading days higher.

Toshiba announced on December 13, 2017 that it will reconcile with WD and revoke lawsuits, and will further strengthen its partnership with the Flash Memory business. Toshiba is currently working with WD on the "Yokota City Factory," a major base for NAND flash memory.

Toshiba said that because of its opposition to WD, it decided to invest in the new plant (No. 6 plant) under construction in the Yokkaichi factory site. However, because of the mutual settlement, WD will also participate in the investment in the sixth plant. In addition, Toshiba will also negotiate with WD on the joint investment in the new plant in Kitakami, Japan, and in the next year (2018).

At the business briefing held on October 13, 2017, Cheng Maoxiong stated that in order to fight against Samsung, the biggest rival, and to increase competitiveness, “the amount of investment in equipment investment and R&D costs will basically reach 3,000 billion Yen each year. , and consider building a new factory (No. 7 plant) in the Yokkaichi factory.”
